Taps – what are they used for and what types are there
One type of cutting tool is the tap. This simple tool allows for the cutting of internal threads.
A tap set enables you to create internal threads in a wide range of sizes. Such a set often includes not only taps, but also dies, holders for the tools, and a tap wrench. The set typically contains both plug and taper taps, and the included dies usually match the tap diameters. How is a tap constructed? Each tap consists of three parts: the cutting part, the working part, and the shank. Depending on how the tapping is performed, there are two main types:
- manual taps
- machine taps.
Manual taps are usually sold in sets of three. They can be used to cut long threads and do not require much force. Machine taps, on the other hand, require more force, which makes them more prone to breakage. They are used for both through and blind holes. It is recommended to use spiral taps for blind holes. The advantage of machine taps is their durability. Naturally, using machine and manual taps requires different types of tapping tools.
There are three types of taps used in thread cutting:
- Preliminary
- Roughing
- Finishing.
The type of tap should also be matched to the type of metal being threaded. Copper requires one kind, while aluminum or stainless steel may require another. Avoid buying taps from hardware chain stores, as they are often made from poor-quality materials and wear out quickly. It is best to purchase them from reputable tool shops. They may cost more, but they are much more durable.
