Screwdrivers by screw compatibility
FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVERS
Used for screws with a straight slot. They are the most common type. Depending on the shape of the tip, they may or may not reach screws placed in recesses.
PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWDRIVERS PH
Used for Phillips head screws, very commonly found. For example, self-tapping screws and drywall screws typically have PH tips. |
POZIDRIV SCREWDRIVERS PZ
Used for Pozidriv screws. Mainly intended for tasks requiring higher pressure, such as carpentry. |
TORX SCREWDRIVERS T
Used for Torx screws, which are pressure screws. These screws are most commonly found in automotive mechanics and electronics. |
TORX SCREWDRIVERS WITH HOLE
These screwdrivers are generally used for repairing household appliances or electronic devices with Torx screws that have a pin. They allow for significant pressing force to be applied. |
NON-STANDARD SCREWDRIVERS
Some household appliances have non-standard screws that require special screwdrivers. These are often included in extended tool sets. |
Screwdrivers by application
GENERAL PURPOSE SCREWDRIVERS
Used for most DIY tasks. |
ELECTRICAL WORK SCREWDRIVERS
Equipped with insulation, allowing safe work on live components. They come with various types of tips, similar to general-purpose screwdrivers. |
PRECISION SCREWDRIVERS
Their shafts and tips are very thin. Mainly used for jewelry making and electronics. Often come with magnetic tips. |
RATCHETING SCREWDRIVERS FOR FREQUENT USE
Allow screws to be turned without lifting the tool off of them. Handy and time-saving.
|
SPECIAL PURPOSE SCREWDRIVERS
These include impact screwdrivers, voltage testers, and others.
ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVERS
Most commonly used in electronics (small diameter screws). They are characterized by fast screw insertion/removal, ease of use, and require less physical effort. |
DRILL DRIVERS
These are multifunctional devices for both amateur and professional use. Besides driving screws, they can drill in various surfaces such as metal and wood. Available in cordless and corded versions. |
DRILLS WITH CLUTCH AND SCREWDRIVING OPTION
These are power tools where the screwdriving function is an additional feature. They are very efficient, fast, and practical. They do not damage the screw, as the clutch disengages the drive once the screw is fully tightened.
Screwdrivers by size
Screwdrivers vary greatly in size. It’s good to have a set of different sizes and use them according to the screw size. There is a relationship between the width of the screwdriver tip and the screw thread diameter.
Recommendations
Use screwdrivers with narrow tips for screws located in recesses. Also, when pressing screws on a surface, it is better to use screwdrivers with tapered tips due to the force distribution. |
The tip of the screwdriver should match the length of the screw slot. Using a screwdriver narrower than the slot can damage the screw. Likewise, a screwdriver that is too large may not fit entirely in the slot, which can also lead to damage.
Since screwdrivers come in various lengths, it’s important to choose one suitable for working in hard-to-reach places. A poor contact angle between screwdriver and screw can result in tool or screw damage.
