TOOLS ESSENTIAL FOR RENOVATION

Before starting a renovation, it’s worth equipping yourself with the necessary tools – both small hand tools and larger, electrically powered ones. Buying the latter can be a significant expense, so it’s a good idea to carefully consider which ones you’ll need long-term and which can simply be rented. What class and features of power tools are best for renovation and everyday use? Which should you choose?

1. Most Useful Types of Power Tools

Among the power tools useful during renovation are:

– screwdriver,
– drill (with features like hammer or rotary hammer),
– grinder (angle or bench),
– circular saw,
– jigsaw,
– others depending on the renovation specifics.

The power source and the power level of the tool can be crucial:

– plugged directly into a socket – convenient and simple, typically for tools of moderate power,
– battery-powered – more mobile, can be used in hard-to-reach places, but require regular charging,
– fuel-powered – usually offer high power and efficiency, but are loud and produce exhaust fumes.

2. Drills

Drills come in many types, but for renovation, the most useful functions include:
– drilling and enlarging holes for anchors, wedges, or fasteners,
– thoroughly and efficiently mixing paints, adhesives, plaster or concrete mixes,

– compatibility with additional accessories for cutting, grinding, polishing, or tapping.

Generally, drills can be divided into amateur and professional models. The key differences are in performance, durability, price, and features. For home use and small to medium renovations, amateur drills with the following features are usually sufficient:

– 500–700 W power – this affects the hole diameter. A 600 W drill can drill holes up to 13 mm in concrete and metal, and up to 25 mm in wood. For larger holes (e.g., for electrical boxes), around 800 W is needed.

– drills with electronic control systems to adjust rotational speed based on bit size and material, helpful for screwing/unscrewing,
– drills with two modes – standard and hammer mode for concrete or masonry,
– lock-on switch for continuous operation without holding the trigger,
– reverse rotation for screw removal or stuck bits,
– multiple speed settings, preferably with at least 2 gears,
– depth stop to control hole depth, useful for thin materials,
– for heavier work, use a hammer drill or rotary hammer.

3. Screwdrivers

For smaller renovations, a screwdriver or drill-driver may be sufficient. Key uses include:

– assembling/disassembling furniture,
– repairing household appliances,
– drilling small holes in soft materials.

Screwdrivers are more compact and lighter than drills, with adjustable speed for precision tasks. They’re a must-have for DIY and light repair jobs.

4. Grinders

a) Angle grinders – versatile tools for renovations and workshops. Available in various power options, they can:

– cut and grind concrete, metal, and other hard materials,
– cut rebar and metal sheets,
– grind surfaces and remove paint,
– polish surfaces.

115 mm disc grinders are for lighter, shorter tasks (400–900 W), such as rust removal or trimming tiles.
125 mm disc grinders handle more intense jobs (up to 1200 W), and some models are designed for professional use.

b) Bench grinders – usually with two wheels, used for:

– sharpening tools like drill bits or knives,
– polishing and deburring metal,
– cleaning surfaces.

Drywall sanders – useful for refurbishing rooms and smoothing plaster, drywall, wood, and finish materials. They often feature adjustable lengths, rotating heads, and built-in dust extraction.

5. Saws and Jigsaws

Chain saws – ideal for cutting thick wood and large materials.
Electric or battery-powered saws – for thinner, smaller elements.
Jigsaws – for cutting curves or non-linear shapes in wood, panels, or construction materials.

6. Choosing Power Tools

Depending on the scope of your renovation and home needs, decide whether to buy or rent tools. Some will be useful long-term, so choose wisely based on quality, performance, price, and your skill level.

You don’t need to buy expensive, branded tools for occasional light to medium work. Instead, consider buying various accessories (bits, blades, discs) compatible with your existing tools.

Look for bundled tool sets – they often offer great value and versatility with interchangeable components (e.g., a motor base with multiple heads for drilling, cutting, or sanding).
